Undergraduate Working Groups

Students enrolled in Practices of Cultural Studies form interdisciplinary working groups early in the semester.  Each group then chooses a contemporary issue in which to locate a research project. By forming projects around debates, movements, crises, or mobilizations affecting their immediate communities (on campus and beyond), students are presented with the the opportunity to perform engaged research and make tangible interventions by sharing the results of their work.

Early October 2010, media sources were abuzz with the latest controversy regarding college hook-up culture: Karen Owen’s “F_ck List.” Owen, a Duke University graduate, created a mock-thesis PowerPoint detailing her sexual escapades with a number of Duke athletes and forwarded it to three friends. One friend sent to a few more people and with that, the list went it went viral.  Hooking-up on college campuses, a widespread phenomenon, is now in the center of public debate. More>>
